What constitutes heresy?

"For many Christians
the working definition of heresy is
"things I didn't already think about God."
Don Heatley

"Heresy is an introduced change to some system of belief, especially a religion, that conflicts with the previously established canon of that belief." Wikipedia

Roberta, this Wikipedia definition is a bit limited, as the rest of the Wikipedia entry shows. I especially liked the following:

In Christianity, heresy is a "theological or religious opinion or doctrine maintained in opposition, or held to be contrary, to the Roman Catholic or Orthodox doctrine of the Christian Church, or, by extension, to that of any church, creed, or religious system, considered as orthodox. By extension, heresy is an opinion or doctrine in philosophy, politics, science, art, etc., at variance with those generally accepted as authoritative."[

So, the beliefs or assertions of one main-line church can easily be seen as heretical by another main-line church, and so on.

So heresy, like honesty and sex and fish tacos, can be both good and bad.

Love, Brad

Roberta,

I LOVE the picture and quotes!! And, did you see that a man named Pete Rollins is coming to Mars Hill to speak? It sounds like his subject will be very similar to the idea of heresy.
