Mary of the Sign

Today is the feast of the Immaculate Conception,
which has been celebrated as far back as the 7th century
and celebrates the conception of Mary in her mother Anne's womb.

As we count down the days until the birth of Christ,
let us honor Mary through this icon (and what, in an ancient yet modern way,
resembles an ultrasound of the child she carried!)
The following piece is from  the December issue of
Contemplative Outreach News
which you can read in its entirety here.

Mary of the Sign
Mary stands square to the viewer, her poised
stillness or silent constant prayer is noted in
the hands, palms extended outward in total
surrender to what has been given. Mary clutches
and yearns for nothing. In early icons Mary was
portrayed as the Burning Bush and Christ the
fire that burns within. She is represented as the
divine vessel of burning love. She knows
and loves Him even before His birth.

The orb containing this revelation rests within her
being, Christ surrounded in gold, symbolizing
the totality of God without image. Christ is
holding a tiny scroll, a symbol of the Scripture
being fulfilled in Him and later to be filled in
each and every one of us. Christ is our interior
teacher, guide master, and rabbi. The icon’s
theology is the link between the Jewish tradition
and the new understanding of Christ.

“The Lord Himself will give you a sign, behold a
young woman shall conceive and bear a child
and his name will be Emmanuel.” - Isaiah 7:14.

Zoe's Feast

Have you ever seen the film Babette's Feast?  It's the story of a French refugee arriving at the door of 2 elderly and austere Scandinavian spinsters to work as their housekeeper and cook.  Babette works quietly for years before winning 10000 francs in a French lottery and instead of using the money to move back to Paris she spends all of it on the creation of a sumptuous banquet to end all sumptuous banquests in order to show her appreciation for her hosts and their congregation.

Well tonight I had the taste of a Babette in the making.  Her name is Zoe, and she is the 13 year old granddaughter of my friend Donna.  She spent 2 days preparing an amazing meal for us. We began with a lovely bruschetta appetizer and then sat down to the main meal of stuffed ravioli and bacon wrapped shrimp and spinach salad.  Did I mention that Zoe made the ravioli from scratch?  Did I also mention that she makes up her own recipes?

Then we finished with a dessert of raspberry mousse with our initials created in chocolate.  (Mine is sideways in the picture.)  All I kept thinking was "Holy Food for Holy People".....you could taste the love.  And it was definitely a Eucharistic moment.  Thank you Zoe for sharing your creative gift.  May your passion for preparing such feasts continue as you bless all those who partake of such a grace as this.

Expand our images O Lord!

What images of God do we carry with us?
Do they empower us to seek and serve Christ in all people,
regardless of race, gender or creed?
Do they encourage us to strive for justice and peace
among all the peoples of the earth?
Do they help us to respect the dignity of every human being,
all of whom are created in the Divine Image?
If not, why do we keep them?

Images that induce guilt and fear (like the ones I grew up with)
can be tenacious in their hold upon our psyches.
Even when you think you have banished them they can pop up like burnt toast -
all smokey & smelly & needing a quick trip to the trash bin.

We need to expand our images of God in order to nourish our souls.
We need images that speak to the mystery that is God.

The image above is one that my adult daughter grew up with
that she would like to replace.
